ameybrook,
great photos, thanks. I have similar examples except that my 91 does not have aa paint job as cool as yours. What is the story behind the paint; is it original or what? Paul, BTW, the later Monsters (93 ish) had outlined "Fat Chance" decals on the down tubes with "Monster Fat" on one side of the top tube. Not nearly as neat as the earlier version IMO. |

Just finished a revival of my trusted Wicked...my sole bike since 1992, when I picked it up in Nanaimo, B.C. Canada slightly used, with an XT groupset.
It has raced, trailed, toured on and off road and commuted for the past 16 years with regular maintenace and replacements. It was in running but neglected order with a worn out set of Rock Shox Indys, worn running gear, and a very uncool cheap commuter bar setup. I have had the original fork replaced and replaced the orig. XT shift/lever combos and cantis ( all thrashed) with used XT 8-speed shifters, Tecktro levers, Avid rear V-brakes and new Deore LX front v-brakes. The original seat post finally cracked and has been replaced with a new Kalloy. this is what began the rebuild. The original stem and bar setup has been returned, which may take a bit of getting used to as it's pretty racey. I'll see how my 53 year old back likes it...... It's new task is as a road trainer/commuter/tourer and baby trailer puller. I am currently training for the Community Challenge leg of the 2009 Tour Down Under, a 100km ride through the Barossa valley. The ol Fat still has a lot of work to do, so it's not retired yet. Pretty good value for $1200 in 1992. I hope in the future to strip it down and get a new powdercoat, but I'd have to stop riding it long enough. Original features: American stem BB XT 7-speed rear hub!!! Seat Collar XT cranks XT front mech ( gotta love XT) fork Paint 1990's Upgrades: Brodie Superlight bar Control Stix bar ends Front wheel with Sun CR16 and Suntour XC Pro Greaseguard hub Frame type (Yo!, Wicked, etc.): Wicked Frame number: 11369W Year of manufacture: 1989 Frame size: 18" Color (original and repainted, if applicable): Original Black with lots of touchups Location (city, state, country): Adelaide, Australia Owner name: H. Burns Photo, if possible: http://picasaweb.google.com.au/lh/ph...YyF819hEBpHIxg http://picasaweb.google.com.au/lh/ph...RvKsRMuyFMwD5g http://picasaweb.google.com.au/lh/ph...SEgpUd6QydiJ3A Thanks to Fatcogs, Adelaide MTB Club, DIY MTB (http://www.diymtb.com.au/ ) and Cumberland Cycle (Goodwood, S.A. )for information, inspiration, parts and service. Frame type (Yo!, Wicked, etc.): chris's trials frame
Frame number: 86266 ( kinda sad that this number is burned into memory ..) Year of manufacture: 86 Frame size: trials frame - measures 19" i think Color (original and repainted, if applicable): was factory black - now jaguar green (rust/etc) Location (city, state, country): winnipeg canada Owner name: owen Photo, if possible: it is really ugly - 21+ years of daily driving has left it a mess. currently being fixed up - will post once i get a few thinkgs squared away .. stolen in 1992 recovered in 1993 - yup - stolen, and i got it back! thanks rougeau _______ added a gusset on the crank side chainstay - where a steel chainring ate a hole through the tube... made a custom seatpost from carbon/epoxy . that was 92-93 ish oh yeah - this is a trials frame - without any cable guides for a fd. so that was added as a mod - i have basically always run this as a 18 speed daily driver .. ---- its a fast bike - very light - ---- i am trying to remember some other mods - but i can't remember. ---- since i ride it everyday - and is parked downstairs right now - i will go look and see. ---- currently replacing - rims - headset - and i just bought some new chainrings ... including a 53 - so i will be very fast .... fast bike man ..... with a good combination of beef . ----- phil wood bb spline - that was a custom order .... ------ anyway i will go drool over my bike now .... ----- one more thing --- u.s. customs used to destroy alot of these frames. they were built with "sealed" tubes, and I guess customs didn't like that ... anyway - ask wendyll - how many frames showed up there in pieces .... sad really ____ ![]() ------------- Last edited by commander; December 31st, 2008 at 3:55 AM. Thanks! I dig the green too! The previous (2nd) owner claimed that it was "from the factory" with matching Rockshox. He purchased it from the original owner in 1996.
I'm interested in comments regarding the white saddle. Should it stay, or should it go? I had the white saddle in my stash and I thought I would give it a try on this bike with the white lettering on the frame. I could replace it with a black Flite. Cheers~ Joe

That is a fantastic colour - never seen anything like it before.
Personally, I think the white seat would work better if you got some Scott AT-2 bars and wrapped them with white Cinelli cork-ribbon. Otherwise a darker seat wouldn't stand out so much with the dark almost everything else on the bike. NOTHING says pro like white bar tape though... Just sayin'... |

Another idea would be to get some while onza porcupine tires for it, but I'm not sure how hard those are to come by these days. Nice ride.

Thanks guys -- I think you are right -- It would need a little more white to pull it off. I may just swap out the saddle for something in black -- and go for that "stealth" utilitarian look. With the stars in the Fat decals, it looks a little "Army".

Definitely go for something more stealth like a black seat, since it already has the Green/Black stealthy vibe... |

That's for a cable guide (wheel) to be able to use a downpull on a toppull situation

Frame type (Yo!, Wicked, etc.): Monster
Frame number: 18398W Year of manufacture: 1989 or 1990, maybe even 1991* Frame size: 19.5" Color (original and repainted, if applicable): black with green decals Location (city, state, country): currently Cambridge, MA, USA*** Owner name: Seth Young (original owner**) Photo, if possible: see attached * Was '89 the first Monster offering? I seem to remember, hazily, that this was among the first Monsters, that I did not have a color option, that the frame shipped with a cheap set of components, and that it was a Wicked with different decals -- but I can't recall any of these details clearly or remember the year, unfortunately. ** I purchased via Silverdale Cyclery (Silverdale, WA) when I was an employee there. I scrapped most of the components that came with it and built it myself, then, mostly from scratch. Many parts from that original build have survived, including -- incredibly -- the original pressed-in bottom bracket, which only now needs to be replaced. *** This frame has been used for off road competition in Washington state and sport and heavy commuting (see photo) in Washington, Oregon, and the Boston area. |

Frame type: Wicked
Frame number: 809W01 Year of manufacture: 1991ish Frame size: 19ish Color: Metallic blue - dark but not so dark Location: Originally purchased Salt Lake City, UT but now in Oregon Owner name: Steve I bought this frame new in the early 90s and built it with all XT, King headset, etc. I recall having the bike called "old" in about 1995 when I had just ridden to the top of the Snowbird (UT) tram. It's still going good, sometimes commuting, sometimes trail riding. ONLY NOW have I even considered getting a FS bike for off road. Will post some pics and the build card soon. Original paint and decals are intact (but have taken a beating). |

That price is what the nicest of the nice ones sell for.....you can upload up to four pics on craigslist. You might have better luck if you took a couple decent pictures and listed the parts that are on it.
Here is an example that has been on craigs for MONTHS now at a similar price and not sold, though with a much better done ad: http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/bik/1263339853.html |
