Post Finally able to add to this Posting!

First off just wanted to boast that I've owned well over 30 Fat Chance MTBs since 1985!

My very first one was a used Black 1984 Fat Chance "Team Comp" with a Box crown fork and Front and Rear Suntour Roller Cam Brakes. I crashed that bike and twisted the fork a bit so the front Brakes never worked right again so I sold it and then bought a 1987 Wicked Fat Chance that is now owned by "Thomas the Fat Ruler" in Germany. My next bike was a Purple 1987 "Fat Chance" with the 69 Degree head angle that is now owned by Davis "The Bikeman" up in Maine.

A mint condition 1988 "Fat Chance" starts off my current list:

Frame type: Steel "Fat Chance" with Reynolds 531 Box Crown Fork w/Roller Cam Brakes
Frame number: 1085 8 F
Year of manufacture: 1988
Frame size: 19.5"
Color: Black Frame/Fork with the Original Balloon Letter Shooting Star Decals
Location: NYC, NY
Owner name: Michael Farkas
Photo: To follow (Can someone assist me in posting photos please?)
Condition: Mint

Frame type: Steel "Wicked" Fat Chance w/Reynolds 531 Box Crown Fork w/Canti Mounts
Frame number: 680W09
Year of manufacture: 1989/1990
Frame size: 19.5"
Color: Currently Repainting Frame and Fork White
Location: NYC, NY
Owner name: Michael Farkas
Photo: To follow
Condition: Will be restored to Mint, when finshed...

Frame type: "Titanium" Fat Chance
Frame number: TF ML 1176
Year of manufacture: 2000
Frame size: M/L
Color: Bead Blast Titanium w/Red Decals
Location: NYC, NY
Owner name: Michael Farkas
Photo: To follow
Condition: Mint

There have been many others over the years that I've bought, sold, traded, wish I still had...but I have no regrets and think that my 1988 "Fat Chance" and my Titanium Fat Chance are the only 2 bikes that I really need for the rest of my life!

I really enjoy seeing everyone's collections here!

A random batch of 4 frames that I had accumulated and then sold on Ebay in 2003:
-21" 1994? Grello/Blue Fade Wicked Fat Chance Frame/no fork-Was NOS!
-55cm Chris Chance Road Frame in Metallic Green with no fork-Was NOS!
-Med 1996 Titanium Fat Chance frame/no fork, USED don't remember who bought it!

Nice Fork!

All you need is some decals, the frame looks like it's in great shape.

Default Ti Serial Number

Ashok,

Your bike's custom serial number is a combination of the original owners initials and TI - titanium.

I bought my Wicked about a month ago. It came with a Manitou PRO XC Mach V suspension fork, which, I suspect is not original. I took it apart with the hope of cleaning and relubing it, not that I really know what I'm doing.....The elastomers at the bottom of the outer arms are SHOT! They crumbled in my fingers. Manitou says that they don't have parts for this fork.
a) Anyone know where I might get my fingers on some replacements / or have a suggestion for how to fake it?
b) If I can find a 1" fork, it probably will have longer travel than the original 50 mm, how badly will a longer travel fork affect the handling?
c) Any suggestions for where to look, other than Ebay?
Sorry for all the dumb newbie questions,

gt

Hi Geeter!

No, there is no overlap in the production periods of the fork and the Wicked. The Wicked is years older.

a) Don't know
b) I fitted one bike that originally came with 39cm forks with a LT (4") fork and I still like it, though it is a truck in really tight turns. I simply adjust my riding, but most will say I am crazy.
c) Suggestions? Buy a proper rigid fork. Aestheticly much more pleasing, period correct and suspension is only 1 factor that defines comfort. The old bikes ride often much better than people expect. Why not giving it a try?

-------------------------------------------------------------------
I've got a 1988 Wicked with the Fat City unicrown rigid fork that came stock. I rode it like that for a while, and then put on a 1998 Manitou SX-Ti (or FS-Ti?) that has about 75mm or 80mm of travel. It did affect the handling a bit, but not awfully. I kept the Manitou on the Wicked and rode that as my main offroad bike for several years. Very sweet ride. Now that I've got another mountain-only bike and the Wicked is set up as road/off-road/touring/commuting, I've put the rigid fork back on.

As far as the Mach V, I'd say toss it. It was low-end even when it was new. I've got the Manitou ti fork still around, if you are interested in buying it. I had Manitou replace the internals on it with newer. It was blowing cartridges all the time, but the newer stuff seems to be much more reliable. It is a decent fork now... titanium springs with oil damping. $60 plus shipping and it is yours. Note: the fork does NOT have a cable hanger, so you have to be running V-brakes on front, rather than cantis. My Wicked is an 18" c-c, 19.5" center to top, so the fork should fit your Wicked, too.

The other option would be to put a rigid fork back on it. Best place to start looking would be your local shops. Used to be, they had tons of rigid forks around from when people moved to suspension, but I'm not sure if that's still the case.

If I go rigid, (no pun intended), how heretical is it to put a not-fat fork on my Wicked? My LBS has a Cro-mo fork that they'll sell me for $25. Its not Fat, I don't know the manufacturer, but it looks like a period fork, not like one of those heavy stancioned looking rigid forks that you see on Ebay for $350. I have attached a photo that the seller sent me when I bought my bike.

Default New Fat registration.

Just found this site. Thanks. I am in the process of restoring my 1986 Fat, frame #86475, original paint was red with yellow fork. I just stripped the old paint and found among other things: 1. the frame #. 2. bottom bracket cable routings are Campy. 3. Drop outs are Suntour. 4. My frame also has a "drain hole" just above the bottom bracket. "see builders forum". I am also in need of a 1" threaded fork to replace the original. Any out there or ideas? Thanks.

Photos only show on the forums in the actual size that you uploaded them in. Your originals that were uploaded are tiny, and won't expand on the web.

Would have loved to see the result after all that effort you put into it, but unfortunatety my laptop does not open .xls files.

Hey Melvin, I'm working on another method of posting and keeping track of everything in the database. The Microsft Excel spreadsheet is an easy way for me to enter it document everything, even on a Mac. Do you not have MS Office? I want to blow up Microsoft, but I still have the need for Office...

Post '91 Wicked

Just picked up my first Fat Chance and I'm really psyched.

Frame: 1991 Wicked Fat Chance (has english threaded BB, not press in) repainted black with computer generated decals (if anyone has decals, I need some)

Fork: Wicked

Serial: 508W18

Size: 18"

Build kit: XTR M900 8spd., King headset, Syncros post and stem w/ Flite saddle, Mavic 519 (nos) 36H rims, Specialized UmmaGumma tires (nos), and I cheated with an AlphaQ carbon riser bar because I plan on riding this thing a lot.

Location: Salt Lake City, UT

Owner: William Ryan
