So damn, it has been like 2 yrs and an undisclosed amount of money later, but the FAT is back! The goal was to return the old girl to her former glory as a race bike and race her in the local circuit. Since my frame had already been repainted and long since lost the orginal components, i went with a smooth shifting 1x10 setup. The frame had the typical seat tube rust, only very minor. I had it fixed and completely repainted. This bike never had a rigid fork on it, so the Bomber Marathon SL NOS from Eli was custom painted to match with custom made graphics. It is just bad ass.

I still have the Paul Lover Levers and new wheels in the works. Then she will be done. Now if i look this good in the racecut Fat jersey, it would be complete.

And Some more pics!

Yeah the newer drivetrain is pretty sweet. period correct is cool, but if you are going to ride your bike a lot the new Shimano gear shifts way better. I love the 1x10. The fat is super fast with a 34 up front and 12x36 out back.

General Specs:
XT 10 Speed 1X10
RaceFace Evolve SS Crank 34t
Cane Creek Direct Pull 5 Brakes
Paul Love Levers- soon
XTR hubs- from 1998 getting laced with new Stans 355 rims
Control Tech 135 stem- custom painted
Easton Carbon bars
Chris King Headset
Marzocchi Marathon SL 2003
Thomson Seat Post

First Ride

So i finished the build last night at mid night. I had most of the parts ready to go. I did a quick tune during lunch and then headed to a local trail at Tanglewood. Strangely enough, this is probably the last trail i rode this bike on before it went to storage like 5+ years ago. I have always loved this bike, but damn i forgot how nice it rides. It is super fast and just carves up the trail. I have gotten lazy riding the full suspension rig, so this was refreshing. The 1x10 drivetrain is perfect for this bike. I could probably even move up to a 36t on the front, but i will waiton that for now. The cane creek brakes are awesome. i had magura hs33 on the fat since 1995, which i loved. The cane creeks feel even better. great brake. i just could not stop smilling.

Here are some pics from the trail.

New Wheels!!!!

Got the new wheels done. Stans 355 rims on 1998 XTR 950 hubs. Purple nipples give a subtle bling. Went Tubeless with some Rocket Rons. This wheel setup is super light and rides awesome. I broke them in on one of my favorite local trails, Moores Spring, near Hanging Rock NC. This was ride #2, so still working out a few bugs..like a slipper seatpost binder. Still got to burn up 10+miles with some good climbing and downhills.
