Default Fat City Cycles Frame Registry

Hey all, while I know of the chart of frame numbers on list over at First Flight Bikes (if you haven't seen Jeff's pages yet, check them out, there is some cool MTB history there), I am planning on assembling a comprehensive database and registry of Fats all over the world. Until I can get something a bit more self-supportive, I'd like this thread to be a collection of Fats.

Here's what we'd like from you for the registry...

Frame type (Yo!, Wicked, etc.):
Frame number:
Year of manufacture:
Frame size:
Color (original and repainted, if applicable):
Location (city, state, country):
Owner name:
Photo, if possible:

I know we couldn't get everything made out there, but it would be nice to begin the effort to track where these beautiful frames are. I'll begin with my newly acquired Wicked...

Default serial numbers...

I have (and have seen) quite a few bikes on which it is difficult/impossible to read the serial number (because of the paint). Have others had the same experience?
Any one else have a frame without a serial number?

I was told by the guy over at hottubes.com, a builder and bike painter in Mass that many of the early, (did not ask about the later FC bikes) bikes were powder coated. This would explain the thick paint issue. Same problem with mine. I can only make out a few numbers.

When working at a LBS in 1983 I was contemplating buying a smoked chrome Diamond Back MTN bike with bear trap pedals then Chris Chance came by looking for retailers and I was smitten. Bike below was actually my second as the first was stolen (a blue tig).

Frame type: Wicked
Frame number: 13229W
Year of manufacture: 1989?
Frame size: 21
Color: Florecent Orange original
Location: Ohio, USA
Owner name: Dana

21 inch Florecent Orange Wicked Fat Chance ordered 1-25-1990 as a custom frame build in Aspen Colorado 1990. Serial number looks more like a 1989 serial numbers in the registry though so maybe it was a 1989 frame.

Mostly original Deore XT components except rear wheel, seat, seat post and tires. To make it the lightest at the time before the Ti Merlin and Lightspeeds and these goofy looking grey colored carbon frame bikes came out I went with Ti spokes and bars. It was a very light bike for the time.

In Aspen early 90's you had two main bike shops. One sold Richey and the other Klein, Marin, Ibis and Fat City. The Fat City's around had the typical primary colors with opposite color forks. That was the style. As an 80's holdover I went with the Florencent orange. Even dorked it out with a matching orange Mt. Zefal Pump. That thing was BRIGHT.

I became interested in FAT City after seeing their Stan the Mud Man advertisement. When it was new bike was so tight and fast fast. I could launch over fallen trees and over the downhill rollers. I try to bunny hop over stuff now and face plant. But at least I look good wiping out on a Wicked.

Default My mountain bikes and Chris Chance

I have a 1990 Team Comp. Originally Wild Cherry, it was repainted "bridesmaid purple" powder coat when purchased and then sable in the mid 90's. It has been pretty stable as a one-speed for about 5 years. This winter it will get an eccentric BB, paint and the cable guides removed. It'll be Phil Wood central.
Serial 024C09

Just finished this 1987 Fat Chance, original color, original almost everything. 18spd Deore with a u-brake. I rebuilt the wheels, put on new chainrings, a chain, grips, a seat, NOS Xtra Hite Hite-Rite, tires and cartridge bearings all round. Derailleur hanger still needs to be aligned and I could use a new rear derailleur.
Serial 87971

1977 Chris Chance (sorry, this is already somewhere on the site, but I wanted them all together). Slim Chance decals because it was refinished at the Factory in the early 90's. 120mm spacing and above BB cable guides, with hand-cut lugs. Full Campy Nuovo Record (I took the Barcons off), except for the aero levers. I rebuilt the wheels and put a Phil Wood BB in.
No serial # (purportedly one of the first three demo bikes Chris made after leaving Witcomb USA and started out on his own).

The database is coming along nicely, guys. Starting with the list from Jeff at First Flight Bikes (thanks Jeff), we have converted the chart to an Excel spreadsheet, and added a couple of different fields, with the option to sort. My wife and computer nerd Kim is developing a registry for the site to allow anyone to add to supply the information to the registry themselves, as well as sort by frame number, frame style, location, and a few other things.

Keep 'em coming!

Scant,

If you ever get the chance to come to our part of the world, drive right by Morganton and go straight to First Flight in Statesville (about 50 miles distant).
They have bikes gathering dust in the corners and back rooms that are much better than almost anything that I have accumulated.

its funnny how yo eddy and me seem to have the same kind of yo eddy from the same year/color and the serials are so different.

i wonder what kind of system they were using with the serials at fat city.

From what I have been reading in our database that is being developed, for the years you are talking about (between 1990 and 1994) , it is pretty simple:

First series of numbers, either 3 or 4 digits, this is the frame number, in the order of production

Next character is the frame type, i.e. "Y" is Yo Eddy, "A" is 10th Anniversary, etc.

The following character is the last number of the year in the 90s, meaning a "2" would be 1992 and a "0" would be 1990.

The last characters are the sizes, like "M" for medium or "ML". Some bikes that used measurements also use the last digit in the measurement, like an 18" Wicked would have an "8" instead of a letter.

This all changes after the move in 1995, though, where the frame type gets put first, then size, then the frame production number. Pre-1989, though, seems to be proving to be a bit tougher to decipher, as the pattern jumps around a bit more.

Default shock a billy

I have a 94 shock a billy in team purple
serial number 033P3ML does this sound correct and would it indicate that it is a M/L because i feel like it is a S/M.
any help is much appreciated

The serial number would indicate that it is a M/L, which is generally an 18" frame in Fat sizes. The serial number is sort of puzzling, though, as the "P" in the middle is an oddball and not normal for Shockas. Interesting.
