'88 Wicked Restoration

Hi all - My first post here - thought I would share.

I've had this '88 Wicked since ~'91. Hadn't ridden it much in the past 10 years, since I've been more focused on road riding, but now I want to get back into more mountain biking. As I was tearing apart the bike to see what components I could still use and what would be required to upgrade, I thought this would be a great time to breathe some life into the frame. Initially I was was going to take it to an auto body shop, and let them "have at it", but in doing my research, I found Tom Kellogg of Spectrum Cycles an hour away from my house. His work is simply amazing (both his custom built bikes and his restoration work). Check it out: http://www.spectrum-cycles.com/

Now, onto the bike... I'll simply let the pictures do the talking - I rode this bike HARD, and the before pics represent that (I'm sorry I didn't take a before pic of the chain stay - it was a mess!). But no longer! Not only is the new Orange Pearl paint gorgeous (better than original, since the decals are now under 9 coats of clear), the frame itself is totally restored. I can't wait to build it back up and start riding. A also had the Rock Shox Mag 20 rebuilt as well, so I should be a happy camper soon!

NOOOOO!! WHYYYYYY?? The original paintjob was so beautiful...

Well, I'm not sure if that is sarcasm or not, but I'm not a huge Pink fan (and did you SEE it??) I was toying with the idea of a "reproduction", but its just not my thing. I'm not doing this for re-sale, just for me :D

I like the speckle paint...I like the orange paint too.

really stellar job on the new....

what kind of Bottom Bracket is that?

is it a fat BB without collars?

I will look forward to seeing the rest of your build...

Its not a Fat BB: I purchased that BB circa 1992 I honestly <EDIT!> Think its Cook Bros.- Its a Ti Spindle, and the sealed bearings are new (http://www.vxb.com/page/bearings/PROD/Kit7479). The BB is counterbored (from factory) and the fitment is perfect (with some loctite 271). There is a locking collar and stacking shims for adjusting chain line and frame clearance which you'll see when the cranks are installed.

Another "Before" Pic

It will look a lot like this when done. I've ditched the Suntour XC Pro Rear and have migrated to a Shimano 7sp Freewheel (so I can still use my Gen1 Nukeproof hubs). I'll write up the full parts list once its back together.

That pink scheme was cool, but it definitely needed an update. Orange looks great , just never clamp the frame in the workstand that's just begging for problems.

Too bad about the original paint job. I would have tried to restore the paint job. But ultimately it is quite difficult using the images themselves to give us a clear impression of how the frame really looks to be able to judge if a restoration would have been useful or not. But no matter I like the new paint job quite well. And the most important thing ever is, that we ride our Fat Chance bikes and have fun with them. In this sense I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Greetings from Germany Helmut

OK, here we go... the build up!

The next few posts document the build.

This set includes the Seat Post (Ritchy Logic 26.4), Saddle (Selle Italia Flight w/ Ti rails) and Seat Clamp (Ringle Ti Stix)

This set is the Bottom Bracket (Cook Bros Ti) and Crank Set (Rtichy Logic manufactured by Sugino w/ a reduction drive for 20t small ring) - I liked to climb vertically in the day. prolly still do ;) Pedals are new... my first foray into clipless - I only rode toe clips before this on my mountain bike, but since I've ridden clipless on my road bike for years, I'm used to them now.

Here is the "Front End". Ti Stem (A custom job, perhaps fabricated by Gary Helfrich - just speculation). Kalloy True Temper Handlebars. DiaComp Brake Levers. Rock Shox Mag 20. (internals rebuilt by Richard Belson a couple years ago)

Staring to put the bits on. Fresh rivet on the bottom bracket guide - thank god I had a rivet gun and the proper size rivet. Legacy Deore XT Front D, new Shimano Rear. I didn't spend a lot on the rear, since if the freewheel lets go, I'll do a major upgrade, and go cassette. Not too many freewheel options these days.

Next 2 posts are Brakes and wheels. Brakes are Suntour XC Pro. The rears are the "SE" or self-energized, which pivot inward. They work OK :) The fronts are actually amazing, but I had forgotten just how hard they are to adjust - have to manage 3 degrees of freedom at the same time. And running a 2.3 tire up front, means NO room for error on those tiny (LIGHT!) Sun rims (radial in front). I had a matching Sun on the rear, but waffled it long ago and built up the Mavic 217 you see there. radial non-drive, 3x on the drive side. Original Nuke-Proof hubs - bearings are still originals and excellent. New tires, new brake pads, all new cables. New Sram Grip shift. Ringle Ti Stix Skewers.

Oh, And i totally forgot about the the totally ghetto-fabulous rear brake hanger I fabricated.. yes, it will be replaced this week, but for now it works! note the SAE 1/2" nut and bolt :)
